Novell NetWare, metin-tabanlı bir işletim sistemidir. Bu işletim sisteminde, kullanıcının ilk olarak ana bilgisayara bağlanması gerekir. Bilgisayar ağı yöneticisi ağa bağlanan her kullanıcı için bir isim verir. Gerekirse sistem güvenliği için bir şifre de verebilir. Kullanıcı, kendi ismini kullanmak suretiyle bağlantıyı gerçekleştirir. Sisteme bağlandıktan sonra bilgisayarda (servis bilgisayarı) bulunan programlardan yararlanabilir. Aynı şekilde, servis bilgisayarına bağlı bir veya birden fazla yazıcıyı da terminal bilgisayarından kullanmak mümkündür.
