While best known for mass-market graphics applications such as its CorelDRAW Suite, Painter and Paint Shop Pro, Corel is also the developer of the lesser-known DESIGNER Technical Suite, geared to the creation of technical documentation, instructional manuals, maintenance references and technical diagrams. At heart a vector illustration application providing a high degree of precision, DESIGNER also includes a range of specialized drawing tools and functions, as well as the ability to handle with a broad range of technical file formats.

The Suite aspect of the title refers to the included related applications, such as CorelPHOTO-PAINT X4, a competent photo editing tool that Corel at one time pitched as a competitor to Adobe Photoshop; Corel PowerTRACE X4 for converting bitmap images into vector format; Right Hemisphere Deep Exploration 5.5 CSE for converting 3D CAD models into 2D graphics; and Corel CAPTURE X4 for generating screen captures. Also part of the package is Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications 6.4; barcode and duplexing wizards; ANSI, DIN, ISO, engineering and architectural templates; and libraries containing over 4,000 manufacturing, electrical and architectural symbols.

New in X4 is the ability to import 3D CAD data directly via an integrated 3D CAD import application, and import RAW camera files from more than 300 camera models. Additional new and enhanced file support includes AutoCAD DWG and DXF, PDF 1.7, PDF/A, as well as Microsoft Office Publisher and JPEG 2000. Also notable is the inclusion of new and improved diagramming tools; new technical drawing tools; the ability to draw, size, and rotate shapes and lines with precision using the Object Coordinates docker; and a new Image Adjustment Lab for creating professional-quality color and tone correction.
