Live Recording
The Nuendo Engine was developed specifically to rise to the singular challenges of live recording. You may be tasked to track an hour’s worth of improv in a jazz club or record a full-blown three-day rock festival. But regardless of the recording task at hand, Nuendo lets you get the job done intuitively, reliably and in excellent sound quality. World-class events such as Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Festival and Joe Cocker’s 2005 tour were recorded with Nuendo. So, why are growing numbers of professional audio engineers opting for Nuendo as their live recording system?

Quality and Flexibility
Without a doubt, sound quality is the top priority in recording. And A/D converters are among the most vital components in determining a recording’s sound quality of. Nuendo runs impeccably with high-end converters offered by distinguished manufacturers such as Apogee, Digital Audio Denmark, Prism Sound, DCS, Euphonix or RME.

Nuendo affords you freedom of choice when it comes to audio interfaces’ appointments, price and quality. Every piece of ASIO/Core Audio-compatible audio hardware available on the market integrates directly into Nuendo.

All the audio inputs you need are yours for the asking. Case in point: In combination with three RME MADI cards, a single Nuendo workstation offers 192 inputs and outputs. And if your recording mission calls for fewer inputs, you can choose from a wide range of interfaces offering 8, 16 and 24 inputs.

Nuendo lets you capture great-sounding tracks that shine in up to 192-KHz and 24-bit quality. Internally, the Nuendo Audio Engine works with even higher 32-bit floating point resolution.
Security
Every performance is unique and can never be repeated, particularly if it’s a live event. This is why the engineers who developed Nuendo put a premium on stability and data security. What’s more, the data storage system used by Nuendo delivers the performance, flexibility and cost-efficiency discerning users have come to expect from Steinberg.

Temporary buffering protects against data loss during recording. Nuendo writes important information into the audio file as it records to ensure that the recording can be restored virtually in its entirety in the event of an unforeseen interruption (for example, a power failure).
Pre-record Buffering automatically buffers up to 60 seconds prior to the start of recording. This ensures that the beginning of a recording is not lost if you engage the record button just a little late.
What’s more, you can create an individual folder for every track to archive data. This option provides the best data throughput, enabling you to record simultaneously to different hard disks. Nuendo also offers the option of recording incoming signals to multiple tracks simultaneously. Again, this enhances data security because it allows a signal to be recorded simultaneously to different hard disks.
Nuendo is designed to integrate readily into network environments, allowing you to use fast, secure RAID systems for backing up your tracks, as well as to easily employ any archiving and backup systems you have available for Nuendo.

Recordings for Several Hours
At some point you may wish to record a rock festival in its entirety. Nuendo affords you the peace of mind that comes with knowing that file size constraints will not impede your recording efforts. While standard audio formats are limited to files no larger than two GB, Nuendo and the WAV64 format let you circumvent this constraint. Nuendo leverages the WAV64 format to accommodate all the factors that typically push other systems over the two-GB size limit - high sampling rates, high bit rates, multi-channel recordings and, particularly, long recording times.

With the benefit of WAV64 support, you can generate very large audio files beyond the typical two-GB limit.
What’s more, the Nuendo 24/7 Timeline enables recordings to continue from one day to the next on the Timeline without the technical problems encountered with other systems when the 00:00 hours threshold is crossed.
Synchronization and Machine Control
Occasionally, a recording situation in a studio or a live event with a simultaneous video taping may compel you to operate the audio workstation from another device and synch the two up. Whatever the remote control demands may entail, Nuendo lets you get the job done with confidence and convenience.

In addition, you can arm tracks and control transport functions via MMC or SONY 9-Pin, and synchronize via time code and clock to external (video) signals.
No worries, if a scenario mandates more performance than your system can deliver - simply solve the problem by networking several Nuendo systems via VST System Link. This technology serves to send transport commands and synchronization data via a conventional digital audio circuit.

Mix and Deliver
To save precious production time, Nuendo lets you prepare for mixing while you’re recording. If tracks are destined for further processing on a system other than Nuendo, it provides all the transfer formats required to hand over files to other digital audio workstations.

The Nuendo Mixer lets you assign effect plug-ins such as EQs and dynamic effects to incoming signals during recording.
Automated processes may also be captured while Nuendo records.
With any number of freely definable markers at your disposal, you can structure the project while recording. The waveforms of all tracks currently in record mode may be displayed instantly to afford you a good view of the process.
Nuendo lets you hand over recordings in the form of Nuendo projects, as well as in all standard transfer formats, including OMF, AES-31 OpenTL and AAF.

Studio Recording and Mixing
An exceedingly powerful production environment, Nuendo provides all the functions required for professional recording, editing and mixing. Inspired signal path mapping, the excellent functionality of the Nuendo Mixer, the phenomenal sound of the Audio Engine, efficient editing tools, extremely flexible automation options – all this adds up to make Nuendo the ideal nerve center for every professional audio studio. Read on if you wish to learn why renowned producers such as Alan Parsons, Chuck Ainlay, Elliot Scheiner and Frank Fillipetti rely on Nuendo for their music productions.

File Management in the Nuendo Pool
The Nuendo Pool window is a remarkably convenient option for managing all the audio, video and MIDI data files used in a project in lists. Its many features include import and export functions, metadata display, searches, sorting, a preview option, and tools serving to organize and archive contents. You are free to define the folder structure as you see to tidy up even the most extensive projects.

Files may be edited directly in the pool. To do this, you can use the 16 offline effects integrated in Nuendo, including Pitch Shift, Gain Control and DC-Offset Distance, as well as well as every installed plug-in. And the Pool’s batch processing facility lets you quickly convert and process many files simultaneously.

Files are inserted automatically at the desired position via the context menu or freely definable key commands (cursor, Time code position or the time position of the original recording). Useful features as Convert, Conform, Batch Rename, Automatic Minimize and Remove Unused File/File Parts, alongside audio CD import and an archiving option, round out the wide range of functions found in the Nuendo pool. In addition, the pool is an excellent choice for working with sound libraries. You can create new libraries and fill them with media files whenever you wish, and archive and import these into any Nuendo project. And with the benefit of drag & drop, you can transfer files intuitively and quickly among different libraries and projects.

Nuendo supports metadata in accordance with EBU specifications for BWF (Broadcast Wave) files. On demand, Nuendo will write these data into WAV, WAV64 and files AIFF. In addition, user-defined metadata may be added every audio file within a project, say to document the name of the artist, the role number or the number of takes. BMF metadata are displayed as soon as audio files are import and are also viewable in the pool. Unless you edit metadata when exporting files from Nuendo, the original metadata record is written into the files in order to assure metadata consistency, which is vital for many production processes.

Audio Editing
Range, Pointer, Stretch, Timewarp and many more editing tools may manipulated directly via mouse, keyboard or a connected hardware remote controller. All standard editing actions can be performed directly in the Project window without having to open additional windows. And you have a powerful Sample editor at your disposal for special tasks such as adjusting the Sync point, real-time pitch-shifting and time-stretching (Audio Warp), and creating individual regions in a longer audio file.

A score of audio effects is available for signal processing. All effects are nondestructive, meaning that they do not overwrite the original file. An Offline Process History oder Task List logs whatever processes you choose to execute, enabling you to remove and modify any effect you have processed audio data – you can even swap one effect for another.

Any other edit performed in Nuendo Feel may be undone at any time; what’s more, your undo options are unlimited. The Edit History lists every edit, allowing you to reverse every single step or an entire processing sequence. So edit with confidence, safe in the knowledge that you can restore the original data at will.

When you’re working with videos, Edit mode in Nuendo ensures that the video image automatically follows all your actions such as moving, trimming, fading and scrubbing. This indivisible audio-to-video bond even holds fast for a unique Nuendo function called "Warp to Picture". This "Elastic Audio" feature lets you stretch an audio sequence within any desired region of an audio file in real time without having to first cut it. The function even lets you manipulate the timeline so that the playback speed changes nonlinearly. And that makes adapting audio to video with pinpoint accuracy a piece of cake.

All fade-ins, fade-outs and cross-fades are nondestructive and computed in real time. An Auto Fade function featuring user-definable fade time facilitates automatic generation of smooth changeovers. You can opt to edit the Fade curve graphically directly in the Project window or - for even more complex tasks - in a separate (Cross) Fade editor.

Freely definable key commands and macros are on board to speed up the working pace. You can program these to execute recurring tasks such as such as pitch-shifting and inversion (and even a combination of the two) at a single keystroke.

Jog and Shuttle are available to help you swiftly locate positions in the song. An additional Scrub tool with adjustable volume and response time lets you scrub individual tracks. You may also assign different jog and shuttle speeds to selected key commands or manipulate them using a remote controller.

Minimum System Requirements
The minimum system requirements state the minimal specification your computer must have to be able to use the software. A more powerful system may be required for certain tasks or larger projects. You can find more information about computer system specification and setup here.
